FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE INTECHNICA LANGUAGE TEXTBOOKS AND COMPUTER PROGRAMS ACCEPTED BY OKLAHOMA STATE TEXTBOOK COMMITTEE Oklahoma City, OK -- I Speak English and Yo Hablo Español,
computer-based language instruction curricula produced by Intechnica International, Inc.,
an Oklahoma company, has been approved by the Oklahoma State Textbook Committee for use in
classrooms throughout the State of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma State Department of Education, through Oklahoma HB1017, has directed the
Oklahoma State school system to provide every child enrolled in Oklahoma schools with a
working knowledge of English and, if that child is a native English speaker, basic
knowledge of a second language, beginning in the 1993-94 school year. The Intechnica
Language Literacy System is an award winning option for schools that are finding it
difficult to comply with HB1017 in offering English as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish
language classes. Effective immediately, teachers across Oklahoma can use textbook funds
to purchase the Intechnica Language Literacy System. Both curricula integrate Intechnica's patented methodology (U.S. Patent #5,191,617) which links the four elements of communication - listening, reading, writing, and speaking into a learning system that dramatically improve students' ability to learn. The process allows the student to record his voice and play it back instantly for comparison against a model speaker. The "open-entry/open-exit" curricula design allows flexibility in student placement and student control of the learning path providing better classroom management capabilities to the instructor. Intechnica's Language Literacy System is designed to operate on most DOS based
stand-alone workstations with CD-ROM drives; in a lab configuration with single
workstations connected to a CD-ROM Client Server; or as dedicated stations on an existing
LAN network. Intechnica's I Speak English program is a complete language acquisition
course organized into Beginner Series, Intermediate Series, and Advanced
Series. With more than 6,000 individual exercises, I Speak English is a
comprehensive English language acquisition curriculum designed by language educators for
English as a Second Language (ESL), and Limited English Proficient (LEP) courses of study.
Each series is divided into modules which fulfill a specific task or instruction, and
provide a learning "core" with various practice exercises in reading, writing,
speaking and understanding grammatical concepts in a sequenced manner that integrates, and
reinforces each skill. Students are guided through the lessons with on-screen tutorials,
menus and an electronic bookmark. The Beginner Series is comprised of two components: Low Beginner assumes
no English language proficiency; it is a phonetic tutor to introduce the English language,
overcome the lingering effect of first language "accent", and develop a sense of
sound fluency; High Beginner is an introduction to English for the beginning ESL
student. It assumes some spoken English skills, but no academic grammar skills. The
material is appropriate for students with 4th-6th grade reading levels. Each lesson builds
reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through an interactive learning process. The Intermediate Series also has two components: Low Intermediate assumes
some English listening and speaking skills, but limited vocabulary and grammar skills. The
material is appropriate for students to build on what they have learned and to expand
their understanding of English; High Intermediate assumes a good concept of
vocabulary and grammar, but variable ability to use in context. The experienced
intermediate student becomes familiar with some of the more complex constructions of
English. The Advanced Series is divided into Communications Skills and Reading
Comprehension. The Communication Skills program utilizes real life
scenarios to teach advanced conversational skills, and gain mastery of the subtleties of
spoken English, while the Reading Comprehension program explores various topics
including literature, science, and social studies to teach advanced grammatical and
reading comprehension skills. Yo Hablo Español is divided into Beginner Series and Intermediate
Series. Each series has of hundreds of lessons to teach students the fundamentals of
the Spanish language through thousands of exercises based on vocabulary and grammar. The
structured grammar lessons are preceded by written and spoken lesson objectives in
English. The program contains spoken Spanish phonetic guides, bilingual vocabulary and
bilingual problem examples. Comprehensive instructional material is available for both curricula to assist the
teacher within the classroom. The I Speak English Teacher Manual is a
complete reference guide for the Beginner Series and Intermediate Series of
the I Speak English Course of Study. The comprehensive manual provides
detailed information on all modules including modules objectives, grammar notes,
vocabulary, and pedagogy. The I Speak English Overhead and Activity Book
provides supplemental overheads and reproducible activity sheets for classroom activities
at the Beginner Level of I Speak English. The I Speak English
Teacher Manual describes various teaching methods and techniques that can be used to
assist in the explanation of grammatical concepts taught in each lesson. The Yo
Hablo Español Teacher Manual provides reference for both the Beginner and Intermediate
Series curricula, and offers valuable information to instructors unfamiliar with the
Spanish language. In addition to the computer program, both curricula can be taught using the Course
of Study Student Textbooks and Pronunciation Audio Cassettes.
All textbooks are self-instructional, and can be used as stand-alone courses for
classroom or home study. The illustrated I Speak English Course of Study
Student Textbook is comprised of three consumable student books - Beginner, Low
Intermediate, and High Intermediate. Each workbook contains over 1,200
exercises and is a self-instructional, stand-alone study course to teach vocabulary,
sentence structures and grammar. There are translation keys in 17 languages including
Arabic, Armenian, Cambodian, Chinese, Farsi, French, Hmong, Japanese, Korean, Lao,
Portuguese, Russian, Samoan, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. The I Speak English Pronunciation Audio Cassettes for Beginner and
Intermediate Series are designed to provide listening comprehension practice
for students using the I Speak English Course of Study Student Books. Native
language support is available for Beginner in Cambodian, Chinese, Hmong, Japanese,
Korean, Lao, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Immersion English versions are available for Beginner,
Low-Intermediate, and High-Intermediate levels.
